Okay, so I'm going to take off my stock AMD HSF, and put on a Volcano 9. Now, I've not done too many HSF-removal's, but the last one I tried to put on, I crushed my CPU Core... It was a Socket370HSF, though (long story... the computer shop paid half of my new CPU, cause they recommended it)

So.

I'm a bit nervous, what do you guys think? What are some things to watch, etc?

I've taken off/put on an old P2 HSF *tons* of times on my Athlon 1900 (It was underclocked...don't ask :D ) And never had any problems...So, I dunno.

Thanks [H], you rock. ;)

Just make sure it doesn't rock around on top of the chip. The newer AMD chips aren't as prone to cracking as the older ones were. Just push firmly down with the screw driver, the clip is bent so the pressure is right on top of the die. Don't let the sink rock side to side and you'll be fine ;)

Hi,

If you're still worry, you can always get a shim. That would help.

-Thanks

heh, and make sure the screwdriver doesn't slip off of the clip on the HS and accidentally crack the mainboard, that kinda sux...

I put it on before I read this, but all went well. I was just really careful. :D

In the AMD HSF Manual, it has a reference to "die" as well - What is it?

Very helpful for future reference, however. Thanks. :)

Yeah, it does. The ThermalTake HSF has little metal clips on the side, and bottom though, so with a slow screwdriver, it's pretty hard to slip out. The stock AMD HSF just had that little metal thing, though, so I was sweating putting that one on. (Well, both, actually...but, whatever ;) )
