Well if we're dealing with similar specs between the two, 28nm process, 384bit, ~3GB, similar # of shader n texture units...

Stay away from any AMD bulldozer chip, they are worse then the Phenom II's.
Right now best bet for a new rig right now, is an i5 2500k/mobo/ram combo, then overclock that 2500k!!
I hate to have to agree about AMD but Intel definitely is the better value for processors and the 2500K is the winner.
I'd wait to see what AMD has in January, if true to their performance increases between generations of gpus, their new stuff will be 70% faster than whats out now for the same price. Not a bad deal.

NVidia's next generation will possibly launch in March, but it appears doubtful that they launch the high-end cards first. If the rumor mills are to be believed, AMD will have no high-end competition until the second half of 2012.
Bulldozer just isn't that compelling from an enthusiast standpoint, maybe piledriver will be ok.
Personally, I am too excited about these new GPU's, whether Nvidia's GPU's are faster or not doesn't matter to me, I just can't wait that long. I imagine they will be similar in performance anyways.

Announced and reviewed is 2 different things.
Remember when they announced Fermi.....and then came out like 9 months later?
Man so depressing that everyone hates the bulldozer, i wanted my new build to be pure amd... oh well.. just been reading through the various threads related to these two cards... The impression I'm getting from thej comments is that Nvidia is falling behind.. can't wait until Jan launch!

What is wrong with the Phenom II? I was thinking of buying one for my socket AM2+ motherboard to replace my X2 5400+.
By the way, for those who didn't read news.softpedia, vr zone, theinquirer.net and etc., the next generation Nvidia is apparently going to be a gradual bottoms up release. In other words their low-end PCI-E v2.0 will come out January or whatever and the others later on in the year. I don't know what the intentions of this approach is really... This gives me the impression we may see a bunch of "in-between" cards (like GTX 555 Ti etc.) in the meantime unless the next generation low-end cards trounce even the higher-end ones. The kind of graphs that I saw though suggests that their next GPUs may be several times more powerful than they are now (unless we see more shenanigans like we saw when Microsoft claimed ENORMOUS performance increases in games with Vista). (And now they say Windows 8 may be tablet-like so people may not even like it or get used to it.)
EDIT: Maybe several times more powerful may not be the case. I just realized they could have cut off the graph at the bottom to give the illusion the new GPU would be way more powerful.

Nope, he was fired around the same time as they fired almost all the marketting people and crap.
So far his firing shouldn't affect current generations, but what may be "scary" is that his firing may have to do with a re-estructuring away from the high end market (think no more 6950-6970).
This is all speculation, but there are many rumors about AMD taking a different approach towards the future than what we would have liked to hear.

This would be very, very bad. Perhaps Intel will jump in the discrete graphics game if AMD vacates the scene?
