Hey Guys !
I already observe this forum since certain time and thought that I should write one of my ideas here. I come from Germany and can't speak english very well but i will try my best.

My crazy Idea

I have an old, small PC-desk and one day i got an idea:
"Why don't install your hardware in the desk ?!"
Now I had to find a suitable place for the hardware components.
My idea was to bore holes into the metal plate and install screwing versions to install the motherboard on it. The power supply, the HDD and the DVD-burner i will try to install into the gaps on the left side of the desk. Then i will make cold light cathodes under the desk and under the motherboard.
I made a "professional" sketch from the desk and where i want to have the components.

A friend mean that i should make plexi around the motherboard... What do u mean ?
I will make pictures of the case how it looks now in a few days.

Please write your opinion about the idea and tell me your ideas ( if you have some )

I like the idea. It's good for a test bench. Just place the components in the places and run 'em.

Thanks for rotating the image, the doctor said my neck will be fine now. Good luck on the mod.

I think its a cool idea. It would be funny when someone asked where your computer was, and you could say "Well, some of its over here, and theres some more over there, oh, and if you look under there, yeah, theres some more of it." Throw in a cool paint job, and that could be a very awesome desk.

I'm thinking : "Paint or not paint thats the question" cause.... i would need very much paint to paint the whole desk :D maybe i will paint a few things of the desk in black... but witch black is the best ? Should i use shiny color and how can i get it shiny ?

I hope u will help me :)

Wuffiman

I would paint it, or at least paint some of the parts as accents. Like for example, the table legs/supports, and the areas where the computer hardware will be. You could use appliance spray paint, such as RustOleum Appliance Epoxy spray paint. That should give a pretty durable finish. In my opinion, you should paint the whole desk, but you can just do accents if you want.

I think this is a good idea in fact I was going to use a similar idea to make a workbench so i can swap out know good parts and mix and match to find out which ones are duds without having to play around with bulky cases. waiting to see how this turns out.

Maybe tomorrow i will make pics from the actually case. At the weakend i will begin with the Motherboard place to make wholes into it for the screws. I'm not sure but i think i will paint the whole desk in black :> cause i luv black/dark-blue ( my mouse is black/blue, my mousepad is black, my 5.1 system is black, my keyboard is black and i've got blue cold light cathodes :p )

well, my only concerns would have been portability, but since you mentioned that you wont be taking it anywhere I'd say the idea sounds really friggin cool.
Something that I thought would be cool that you could also do is decide where you are going to mount all your hardware and then place windows flush with the desk accordingly, so you can look into the desk and see all your hardware but still not lose the functionality of the desk

Awesome idea! That would be really cool, look through the desk and see the mobo in one area, the HDDs in another, opticals in another... that would be neat!

I wanted to make plexi at the left pannel where the hdd is i had another idea:

What do u think ?

Looks pretty good, I'd say go for it. Are you gunna custom make the cabels to reach to the individual components?

Hey !
I'm back ! ^^
After a few hard hours i got my PC into the desk ^^ i didn't install the hdd on the final place, same with the cd-rom. I wish me to my birthday a dremel, then i can cut windows into the desk parts... Which dremel is the best & cheapest ^^ ? I will post the pics today or tomorrow. Hope you like then ;]

Greetz !

Wuffi back On Line :>

*update*

So...

I installed the components in it... everything ok... i'm just waiting on my dremel ;) then i make windows etc :p now the pics :

Can you please resize it a little :)

Are you going to cover your MB with anything?
Hate to see it die from ESD

Especially with that speaker right below it.

p.s. w00t!!! no more n00bie!!

I may be be wrong, but is it not a bad idea to have the hard drive right next to the sub? I thought that they were sensitive to magnetic <sp> fields. If that didn't kill it, the vibrations from the sub just might. Please correct me if I am wrong. I like the idea of your mod, but I hope that there are more change planned.

Nope, magnets won't affect if. As a matter of fact, inside the hard drive are some incredibly strong magnets, and those don't affect it. I have even seen a guy who took some very powerful rare earth magnets, put them on top of his hard drive, and started his computer to show that it didn't do anything. The vibrations might affect the HDD if it shakes it enough. That could be solved by mounting the HDD with anti-vibration mounts.
