System wont power on with HD

Hey,

I built a new system for someone and they gave me their old dead system. Anyway when I hook up the hard drive to my system the PC refuses to power on. Does this mean the drive is dead or am I doing something wrong?

It's a 320GB WD so its in warranty still if I need to replace.

there might be a short circuit in the power cable, unplug the drive and see it your PC starts up. replace the power cable
 
I tried it on another PC and it still didn't work so i guess the drive is shot.

Darn I cant RMA it either since apparently it came from a MyBook external drive case...
