I have a completely new system that just wont post. Fans/mobolights/hdds start operating but monitor stay on standby, no beeps either. Tried different PSUs tried without memory, tried without chassis... only thing i havent tried is switching the CPU because i dont know anyone i can borrow a LGA775 cpu from.

CPU: C2D E6600
MOBO: ASUS P5B Deluxe
GFX: MSI NX7900 GTO

I'm left quite certain that either the Mobo or the CPU is faulty. People say that CPUs very rarely fails but when they do the symptons are what im gettin. Same for mobos apparantly though they fail more often.

Now can a mobo be dead like this out of the box when the onboard lights still lights up when turning on power? Is it likely this is only a faulty motherboard? Is it likely that a completely new E6600 ships dead?

I don't know how to solve this but to RMA one of them so I can see wich one is actually faulty. What are your thoughts?

Yes, it can.
If the only possibilities are a dead mobo or cpu, my money's on the mobo.

I would say it's the mobo as well. I am having a similar problem actually atm. I got my new 7950 GX2 and popped it in (previously had an x800xt) and my monitor received no signal upon startup as well. I put in a pci card along with it and it worked, so i figured it was either my PSU not being able to get enough power to the card or my pci-e bus was fried. well i went and bought a BFG 650watt PSU and that didn't fix it. I still haven't been able to try my card in another comp yet, but i've tried several pci-e cards and no go. Think my pci-e bus is fried? thanks

Try clearing CMOS. New board, no post, always worth a shot if you haven't done so already. CLRTC jumper down and to the right of the battery.

hmm whats the point when its already default? Is there a good chance this will solve my problem?

Optimized defaults are typically loaded on new boards. Clearing CMOS will by default load the fail safe settings. Only takes 30 seconds ... worth a shot I suppose.

Yeah sure it is I didnt know that :) Its just that I put all the equipment away but hey im gonna try this out tomorrow then, but still it doesn't explain why motherboard wont put out any beeps even when there is no memory installed on boot. Shouldnt that directly mean a bad mobo/cpu? I know for sure that my chassis speaker works and it was connected correctly...

Ehh btw, technically how do I remove the onboard battery, i never tried that before.. thanks

You can usually take a small screwdriver and pop it out. Just be gentle. I've seen a couple of different mechanisms by most mainboard mfgs .... but if you can position the screwdriver just a bit under the battery just flip it out.

There are things that have to happen before the post sequence starts. Power rails have to fire at exact times. It's a very delicate timing cycle, if somethings a bit off or marginal, or just staright up bad ..... then no post codes ...
