system won't overclock

so i've had this system for about a year and a half and it's getting behind the times, so i'm gonna start overclocking the processor a bit, just like 300ish mhz since i just got a new zalman copper cooler (which is sweet by the way). So i go to the bios on my abit ic7 mobo and set the ram timings to fixed, and some other simple stuff, but when ever i change the processor speed, even ljust like 2 mhz, it gives me a cpu unworkable or has been changed error. Sometimes the moniter won't even show anything. It's really frustrating, anyone have an idea what could be the problem. 2.4c intel. 1 gig kingston ram. Abit ic7 motherboard on a 9700 AIW pro. please help, i wanna get the most out of my system especially with the new cooler
 
banana, did you lock the agp/pci? what speeds and timing are your ram running at? Do you have a reliable PSU?

The 2.4C's are really good OC'ers and the IC7 is a good mobo for ocing so those are definitely not the problem. You can go to the forum at Abit's site or any oc site for bios settings for that board, I don't have one so I can't advise you on that...
 
agp/[pci is fixed frequency 66/33mhz.. my ram speeds are 1:1 and my psu is an antec true power 430, more than enough
