ok, so got my new system up and am ready for OCing but would love advice/have some questions.
first the system specs:
coolermaster 690
antec SG850 850W
core i7 920 + thermalright ultra-120 1366 RT
asus p6t deluxe
corsair 6GB XMS3 DDR3 1600 (3x 2GB) 9-9-9-24
2x BFG GeForce 280 OC
2x WD 640AALS (RAID0)
Vista business x64

I've got the system up and running with latest drivers installed and all is good.
right now everything in the bios is set to stock or auto
the memory is reporting as only running at DDR 1066 speeds.


first question (im used to messing with FSB so the new BCLK is a bit new to me).
I've read thru bittech's 920 OCing article and Kyle's 920 power/heat articles but am still unsure where to start. Id prefer not to move into voltage mod territory so am simply looking to get my RAM up to its spec'd DDR16000 speeds and push the cpu up as stable as it can go without messing with voltages.

do i really just need to play with the BCLK and DRAM frequency lines in the BIOS?
also, is playing with the BCLK frequency the same as with the FSB in older motherboards where I need to scale the DRAM as I scale the BCLK? or would i be able to simply up the ram to 1600 out of the gate before playing around with the CPU frequency?

ok. thanks for that video. so BCLK does act like the older FSB speed and skew what the DRAM frequency choices will be.

even with all the vids Kyle has posted and the posts from others, messing with the voltage still makes me nervous. guess i gotta pop my voltage cherry sooner or later. :)

i know for sure the i7 is good up to 1.9v on the dram(another reviewer was overclocking the i7 940 and was using 1.9v and it didnt kill the cpu but i wouldnt recommend a voltage that high).. though if you have memory rated for 1.65v use 1.65v the board he did that test on was acting weird and made him use 1.66v

yea im definitely not worried about DRAM voltage as mine is rated for 1.65v (i think its at 1.5v now but ill double check that when i get home. this is the RAM kit i got. the dominators were out of stock @ the time of purchasing, and save for the bigger heat spreader, the only noticible difference i saw was these are are at 9-9-9-24 instead of 8-8-8-24

id bump the voltage up to 1.65 on the dram just so there wont be any stability issues while overclocking.. but generally with memory now theres almost no noticable difference between 8-8-8-24 and 9-9-9-24..

overclocking id say dont exceed 1.4v on the processor.. but odds are i doubt theres really a air cooled heatsink that can handle 1.4v on an i7 anyways unless your running some insane high CFM fans on a TRUE black.. but id base the overclock off kyles.. working your way up to 3.8ghz.. if everythings running fine and its stable for a day or so at that speed and the temps seem fine.. worth a shot to work your way up a little higher.. and dont be scared about high temps on the i7.. anything between 75-90C full load is pretty normal when you get above 3.6ghz..
 
ok. so ive started OCing
here's where im at so far:
BCLK: 160
DRAM: 1604mhz
CPU voltage: auto
DRAM BUS VOLTAGE: 1.65 (which auto jumps to 1.66 as seen in Kyle's tests)

case has the side panel off right now and seems to be running quite cool with just air cooling? ambient room temp is 74*F

running prime now to see how i fair. still nervous about touching the cpu voltage even though everyone else is to go past the 3.8Ghz barrier

im hoping to find something that will satisfy me for a 24/7 up time in addition to nice OCing in games.

pic below of current status. thoughts/comments? words of encouragement/enlightenment/mockery? :)



i also ran core damage in parallel with prime95 (just for a few mins to see temps) temps went up about 10* so it seems im maxing temps now around 75C at this stage.
