I just upgraded my friends gaming PC and everything seems to running fine with the side panel off. Once I put the side panel back on, the PC shuts off randomly. The system temp is really high. According the hardware monitor the system temp is at 66C idle. The motherboard is a GA-EP35-DS3L. All the other temps seem to be fine. What should I do to get the system temp down? Components are E6600 @ 2.4GHz, 2GB corsair PC6400 ram, 8800GTS 320MB.

Remove the Northbridge heatsink and clean off the stock thermal goop. Apply some Arctic Céramique or some other non-conductive paste and reinstall.

I'd check the northbridge cooler and see if it's on tight. Give it a wiggle, make sure it's not loose. If it is, as said above, remove it, clean it, and re-apply with some thermal compound.

If the side panel on vs. side panel off makes a difference, though, it may not be the northbrdige cooler. How are your other temps? Is the CPU temp normal, or is that way high, too? Is the northbridge voltage reported in the bios normal, or does it look way high?

Sounds like the system temp sensor is wigging out, or it's right next to something really hot. I doubt the air temp in your case is 66c, try disabling or raising the shutdown limiter in the BIOS for that sensor.

What kind of case are you using? Also what size fans and how many of them are operating?
