System sleep and video card

I noticed today that when I put my system in sleep mode the fan on my new 6800gt stops running. (I then checked my other computer and the vid card fan in it stops running also when in sleep mode). I thought that that was odd because all other fans in my computer run normally when in sleep mode. I touched the video card and it was very hot :eek: . Does anyone think that the card could get hot enough without a fan while in sleep mode to cause damage? I don't think I will be putting my system to sleep anymore. Thanks.
