This is a system a family member of mine (out of town) is considering purchasing just to do word processing and run programs for medical billing.

Case – Apex ATX w/350 PSU
Motherboard – ASRock
Processor – Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67Ghz)
Memory – Kingston 256MB pc2700 DDR
Hard Drive – Samsung 80GB
CD-Rom – MSI 52x
DVD-Rom – LG 16x
Floppy Drive – Sony 1.44MB
Keyboard – Microsoft Multimedia 102key+17function ps/2
Mouse – Microsoft optical ps/2
Speakers – Labtec spin 75 2.0
Monitor – 17” SVGA CRT
Printer – HP Multifunction – Printer/Scanner/Copier
Operation System – Windows XP Home Edition

I don't have any more information than that on the parts. Please be serious in letting me know your thoughts.

I wouldn't pay a whole lot...they are obviously skimpping on parts...ASRock? I wouldn't trust it...especially to an out of town friend. If they can put a diff motherboard in there for (at most) an additional 50 bucks...do it.
 
why have both a cdrom and a dvd rom? just get the dvd rom since it will read both cd's and dvd's.
 
I'm a little confused,

Are you buying the parts and assembling or are they handing you a box full of parts and asking you to make it work?

Bill it like this

Charge $60 per hour labor

Computer build including OS install: Parts + $120 labor
All-in-one Printer setup: $60 labor


A question, why are they getting a cd-rom and a dvd-rom for a medical billing box?

I would also recommend some sort of backup solution be integrated into the build. Whether it be cd-rw or tape it should be in there.

You guys are expensive. What I charge our Parish office - 20 bucks for the assembly and 20 bucks for windows install and 20 bucks for Network install/app setup.

Yeah, its cheap, but its pseudo volunteer. I used to do it for free...

Exactly! Come to find out, she got a quote of $785 (Parts + labor). Supposedly they're providing 1 year tech support and warranty.
 
if she is going to spend that much and only use it for word, put together a nice dell system for her.

well, that explains the crappy parts, the unnecessary components and the incomplete solution.

Let them do it. It will be one less tech support headache for you down the road.

Expensive? My/our prices are cheap for the industry... The first time you have a build/install/setup go wrong and you have to spend 3-5+ hours troubleshooting you'll undestand why the prices are what they are.

You have undervalued your services. Just think of all the money you are missing out on by charging so little. Granted, you are doing work for a parish so I can understand the lower prices but I'm guessing those are pretty close to your regular prices.

Think of the next tech that comes along and does work for them. That person will have to put up with the constant, "I use to have a guy that did it for $, why are you so expensive?"
 
I don't mean expensive for professionals. I mean expensive for friends.

If you're a professional, charge what the market will bear - I got no issue with that. But if you're just a hardware geek like me, and are adding money to the parts list for your time, I figure you should charge enough so they know its not "free" but not so much as to make it not worth their while. Assuming you're willing to do it in the first place.
