System ROM Space is Full? Something else?

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8SNSC-939 motherboard. Two controller cards. Adaptec 39320A-R, & Promise TX2000.
An ATI Radeon X800Pro

4 SCSI disks are on the adaptec controller (two per channel)
2 IDE drives are on the promise controller (one per channel)
1 CDRW & 1 DVD-RW per onboard IDE channel

When booting up, the Adaptec card will scan the drives attached to it, the onboard raid IDE bios will show that it's disabled. The ide drives will be detected. The Promise controller detection will not show up when booting.

I have changed the slots of the two controller cards, swapping each, and when one is closer to the AGP slot, that controller will show up during POST, and the other will not POST.

I have windows installed on a SCSI disk.

I had posted here a while ago about my system several times, trying to solve various other problems. The last thing i'm down to now is this. I don't have any place to store data, i only have 40 gb for everthing right now. Windows = drive 1 (10gb), Apps & pagefile = Drive 2 (10gb), games = Drives 3 & 4 raid0. I do have 2x 100gb IDE drives, but they are not being detected in windows. I have tried uninstalling the promise controller to no avail.



Windows will detect both adapters, and it will detect & install the drives on the adaptec controller but not the promise controller :(

Is there anything I can do so windows will detect the two drives attached to the promise controller? Or to get the bios from the second controller to POST?

Please no questions about why. It is as it is. I am not interested in taking out the promise controller. I want to use both.

I have been considering removing the two ide drives and making it pure scsi, but I should be able to get both to POST, because the very first install i did of windows, i was able to get both boards to POST and all the drives installed!

Perhaps some sort of death clock???
heh... The two cards are in adjascent slots right now. Would seperating them by at least 1 slot help maybe?

Why not use the onboard raid for the 2 ide disks? It probably won't be much of a hit from the Promise card. You could also use software raid 0, and 1 if you have a server Windows OS.

 
Probably wont be much of a hit? I didn't pay the money for a promise card to not use it... besides that fact. I have the DVD Burner & CD Burner on seperate ide channels, and I don't want to stick a raid with them because if I ever have to copy from cdrom or dvdrom to my storage drives (or vice versa), it will be painfully slow. Been there, done that, hated it!

I've built this is as a quiet gaming system, with horsepower (for heavy multitasking), eg. burning a dvd while playing WoW. I have it all in an antec P180 case. My laptop is louder than this thing! (other than the hdd's, which I don't mind for the speed increase... it sounds just like my old 486 when it accessed the hard drive... ah the memories :) ).

I want as little performance hit as possible from the hard drives accessing data, so the cpu is free to do what it wants.

Raid 1 takes almost no CPU. The main bottleneck here is that it might have to copy the buffer to the IDE device twice, and that is not a particularly difficult task. The onboard might actually be faster - it might not be on the PCI bus but attached directly to the north/south bridge. I assume you mean this board? Check out page 7 of the manual - the ide controllers are off the chipset. The cdrom and dvd will be fine on the same channel - they're only gonna hit 30 MB/s anyways, they don't each need a channel to themselves.

What I'm trying to say is that having 2 controllers is what's causing you problems, and that comes as no huge surprise. I hit the same thing; this is more or less marked WONTFIX in the bug drawers of PC part makers. Not much to do about it.

 
I had it working before. Windows recognized the SCSI disks from the Adaptec controller, and the two IDE disks from the Promise controller.
I do intend on burning data on the cd's from the other disks which would be on the controller if I did what your suggesting.
 
It's just a thought....
But you could find SCSI versions of your DVD and burner.
You'd get the speed when burning and be able to use the onboard IDE RAID.

Or not....

Glad I'm not having similar probs.....(no SCSI for me....too cheap)

Sadly almost nobody makes SCSI dvd burners, and if i were to buy another dvd burner, I would want it to be dual layer. I doubt any manufacturers have DVD+R DL SCSI Burners...

I'm going to have another jab at it tonight, swap the cards around in the different PCI slots, see what happens.

Whats scaring me, is that i'm seriously considering buying another scsi drive just for storage now :( After I went all out and spent like $600 on the controller, cables, terminators & adapters (and then another $200 on 9.1gb hd's, which spurred me to go scsi).

Then the whole system will be all scsi except for the burners....
 
Well, you are right.....Plextor isn't making SCSI anymore....and they were the SCSI kings of optical.
