System Restore on XP not working?

Hi all, my father in law says his internet stopped working after a power outage. A technician came out and did a System Restore and all was well. The power went out again, lost his internet connection, but this time System Restore keeps saying 'restore point failed'. He's tried several highlighted dates but all of them fail now. He lives several states away so I cant just go and take a look at his PC. System Restore sounds like an easy option, but alas, it won't restore anymore :(

Any ideas why it wont work? Thanks

That happens every now and then if the file is corrupt or some other file can't be replaced. Logs might tell you more. That said if he had to power outages like that which screwed up his pc he should probably get a UPS for one, and probably should try a check disk.

Does he have the restore CDs? Probably would be easiest to just do a repair install now.

Thanks. He probably does but he's older and not very computer saavy so I don't think I could walk him through it over the phone. I'll see if I can have him do a CheckDisc.

that seem to fix anything?

If nothing else you could have him install something to give you remote access to the computer, then put the CD in and you start the process. Then would just need him to restart it, and give you access again to finish installing patches and stuff like that.
