System Restore on Shutdown/Startup/Logout

I was wondering how to set up a pc to automatically restore to a specific set of system settings and programs at shutdown or startup. I have had this experience when I was in college and wanted to replicate it at my school. To clarify what I'd like, I basically want to have the computer reset itself to a specific set of programs and settings that I choose every time the student/user shuts down, starts up or logs out of the computer. Doesn't have to be all of these every single time but a minimum of 1 of these options. Thanks in advance for the help.
 
I was hoping that it was a built in feature to windows and not a program. Is there a way to do it without the program?
 
There's SteadyState for XP that's free from MS.

As for Vista+ I only know of Faronics and I believe there's another company similar with the same type of software as DeepFreeze. TBH DeepFreeze is worth the cost for a school.
 
Our school is very hard up for cash so if there is a cheaper or free option for this that would be better. My colleague has told me that there are some open source options but I have never looked into it. We also want to know what the fastest and cheapest method for cloning a pc would be.

Are you using AD and Vista+? Look into WDS if you are.

As for a basic free cloning program there is Clonezilla.
