System reboots

Hi guys,

Wasnt sure what section 2 post this so this will have 2 do .
The problem is, when I try and do a registry scan, it gets 2 a cetain point(about 15 seconds into it) and my PC reboots its self.
Have scanned no problems with spybot, it found a couple of entries and deleted them, but have tried 2 run Reg-Mechanic and various other reg scanners, all with same problem.
Any ideas would great

it's possible that your harddrive might be going bad or the ram maybe be going bad.

one way to try to see if everything's okay would be to backup anything that's really important , format the HD and reinstall everything from scratch, if that completes- you may be fine.

to test ram, you could download a bootable image of Memtest86, burn a cd, then boot from that cd and run memtest for several loops to let the ram reall warm up and see if it gives errors. if it does- then try to isolate the stick that gives you errors by testing one stick at a time.

to test the harddrive, there's a utility suite called "microscope 2000", but it might be kinda expensive, altough it is the best thing I've seen to test harddrives with.

now on the other hand, if you don't want or can't loose anything on the harddrive, you could try to do an "overlay" or "repair" installation of windows and see what happens after that when you try to scan registry again.

there's a thing about memtest though: if, when you try to test the ram sticks, it gives you errors no matter what ram slot you use- your motherboard or processor may be bad, to narrow the issue down, you would need to use known good components from a different computer.

yet another possibility is that there's just some wacky corruption in windows itself and you don't have a hardware problem, the overlay or repair installation of windows should take care of it; if they do not, then you are gonna have to reformat the harddrive and reinstall everything from scratch.

by the way, just FYI...
spybot is only one of the good free spyware scanning and removal tools: I use Ad-Aware and also (under win xp or 2000), Microsoft's Anti-spyware.

ad-aware and spybot can both run in the safe mode, ms antispyware cannot.

ad-aware allows you to do a thorough scan of the system and remove whatever it finds.

in addition to that function, spybot can immunize your system from known bad webpages.

ms antispyware can also scan and remove AND it has real-time protection, as it runs its security agents in the background when the computer is on.

some people also use Spy Sweeper, but I personally find it very annoying with its notification messages about every single hiccup and fart that windows makes.
