System reboots under stress testing

Anyone ever have this happen? At 4ghz after a couple minutes of running prime95, with no warnings that it failed, I get a reboot, even though 3.8ghz is stable. At first I thought it was the psu, but I'm running stock voltages except for 1.25v core, so 500w should be plenty. Only thing is that I'm using a 4pin cpu connector instead of the 8pin, since the 8pin isn't long enough to reach my mobo. Temps were fine too, 60c coretemp. I thought it was supposed to give a warning in p95 before it crashed?

I had the mem multiplier at the lowest, to get something like 1222mhz (It's rated at 1600mhz). That seemed to make it last a little longer, but it still crashed.

Won't give you a warning if it is highly unstable under load. Sometimes as soon as I would hit start for the stress test it would instacrash. As you get closer to stable settings it will start giving you errors and halt the test.
 
you dont need the 8 pin unless you are running insanely high voltages.. but even then its pointless..

the other 2 said.. 1.25v is not enough for 4ghz.. boost the voltage 1 step at a time.. and yes instant crashing is normal when your voltage is way off.. its a safety feature.. so like beaverman said as you get closer to the stable voltage you will start getting bsod's.. then p95 will show an error..

the issue is not the memory its the voltage.. work on that first before you start messing with other stuff.. id start off at 1.3v and then work your way up.. if its stable at 1.3v then try working your way down til its unstable.. then go back up to the last good voltage setting.. then you will have the lowest stable voltage possible at that overclock.
 
if your known stable voltage is higher, just keep raising vcore until its stable, make sure nbridge is also stepped up a little bit.
 
I think I'll just keep it at 3.8ghz now. No point in overvolting and shortening the life of the cpu for a 1% performance difference.
 
i have the same thing with my amd system. occt runs just fine on every test.linx runs fine on every test ive ran. prime95 runs for an hour-hour and a half then it reboots the system. ive done extensive testing with gaming and bechmarks and never had any problems so i leave it alone at my moderate 3.6 oc..
 
Windows reboots by default on a BSOD. That's most likely the culprit. Your OC is unstable.
