System random freeze

Ok so im not sure what caused this, but 2 times now the computer has started running very slow and the displays will turn themselves on and off, sometimes showing the mouse, sometimes showing some of the windows, sometimes showing only black screens.

im not sure what is causeing it, wondering if you guys had any ideas.

system specs:
intel i5
gigabyte UD2
hd 5870
4 gig DDR3 ram

check hardware first,
psu, cables secured, etc...
then maybe re-install drivers
normally its a bitch to find out what the fault might be.

i have the XXX xfx HD 5870

the two times it happened i was first checking the audio setup for hte integrated mobo audio and second i was testing out a web cam
