System performance in WoW

I got a few questions. My current setup is in my sig, 1920 maxed multisampling, all setting maxxed, etc..

Why is it everytime I fly near Dalaran, my computer severely lags and frame rates drop under 5? It also takes about 5-10 secs for characters to load. Does this happen to everyone, just because Dalaran is so populated?

Second, when ever there's lots of AOE going on, my frame rates drop under 10. An example of this is in UP during the gauntlet for Skadi the ruthless. Every time he drops those smoke trails, it kills my frame rates. What setting can I modify to help with that? Since I want to play with the best settings as I can, I don't want to use the preset settings to turn everything down.

Thanks

As for Dalaran, there isn't enough computational horsepower available that will get you a good framerate there.

As for all the AOE slowdown... I have no idea, I don't have that issue.

The AoE slowdown may be client-server related, as your are sending/receiving a lot of data (and not even just damage numbers) and your client is waiting on the server to respond before it tells your system to render something some of the time. If that's the problem, then there might not be anything for you to do, however your problems seem rather extreme.

It is definitely not the power of your system, as yours for WoW purposes is just as powerful as mine and mine does not have nearly the same difficulty as yours. AoE doesn't slow me down at all. Dalaran does dip though (but it's still very playable). That makes me lean towards more the connection thing.

Its a couple of things.
In raids, there is a big lag issue. When your 25 man starts aoe'ing down mobs the server cant respond in time. Blizzard is trying to fix the issue but there is no eta.

Dalaran is just nasty. Higher res textures with 100s of players rendering in small place is tough enough without having to deal with the server side issues.

Okay, like everyone else said Dalaran isn't a problem. It doesn't matter what you are running Dalaran will drop frames. As for the AoE issue, as stated above it is a WoW issue, not your system hardware. I used to run my brother through SM and I would pull nearly the entire instance in one pull on my DK and bring all the mobs to the begining. I would then drop DnD and use UB and my system would stutter like crazy... definitely not my machine. What kind of card do you have? Are your drivers the latest? I suggest checking the drivers to be absolutely sure that is not the issue.

Just wanted to let people know, running in (maxed)windowed mode seemed to be the problem. When I turned that off I had no problems with lag in dalaran. But since I run dual monitors, there's no way I can drop the windowed mode. It's way too useful.

I have the same issue with running in windowed mode, the performance is MUCH worse than when running it full screen. I'm running a 8800gts and was thinking of upgrading to a 4870 to help with this, guess this throws that idea out the window.

ya questhelper lagged me REALLY bad... get carbonite, its WAY better and its totally free now.

Whenever you fly past dalaran you frame-rates tank, it is because the system drive is thrashing to load up all the armor models, and textures of the few hundred people in the area, the better your settings the more thrashing it will do, best thing is either turn it down, or to stay away. :D

Otherwise, get a blazing fast ssd for a wow drive :(

The initial frame-rate tank is definitely a load issue. I upgraded from a regular 7200 drive to a 15k.5 cheetah and that doesn't happen anymore. However, my 8800gts can't seemingly handle all the rendering in dal and framerates are generally bad in dal.

Dalaran now is Shattrath a year ago (and Ironforge the year before that): where everybody goes to sit and lag. You can't really get around it...you can just try to withstand it. Or hang out in the sewers.

i load pretty fast in dal... i cant say that there is a delay @ all really...

max on everything, shadows on max with system is sig. 50mb of addons running

Your raptor probably helps load times a bit, compared to the people who have issues.
