I recently bought and installed a new mobo/CPU for my system. This left me with two used parts (Asus mobo w/ P4 still attached). I bought all the other parts I need for a new system and proceeded to assemble it. This is where the problem is:
I put the PSU and mobo/CPU in the case, added RAM and video card, connected the power switch/speaker/LEDs. Then I connected a monitor and keyboard and flipped the PSU on (in the back). The keyboard lights flashed and the light on the mobo came on. Next I powered on the PC (in the front).
The CPU fan spun up fine, the power LED on the case came on and that's it... No video, no beeps, I couldn't even turn it off by hitting the power button again... The only way to turn it off was by flipping the PSU off in the back.
I tried it with a different video card, different RAM, different system speaker/beeper. I also tried taking the mobo out of the case and running it on a hardwood surface all to no avail.
As a last ditch effort, I decided to try another PSU. So I pulled out a working PC. I did not remove the PSU from the case it was in... I simply opened the side panel, disconnected it's P1 and ATX connector's and attached them to the mobo (which I placed on the table surface next to the working case). Eureka! It powered up fine, I got video, the BIOS came up fine, I had keyboard input, and shorting the two pins on the mobo worked to both turn it on and off.
So... My conclusion: Bad PSU. I RMA'd it and the replacement came.
Well, crap! Same problem! However, the other system's PSU still made it come on just fine.
This time I RMA'd it for a different model PSU, figuring that even though the casing said it was compliant with my hardware, maybe there was a mistake. No luck... Same problem.
So now I said to heck with it... I'll just pull the PSU I know will work from the PC I already have and put it in the new system and then put the new PSU into the old system.
Well, the new PSU works in the old system just fine. However, I was dismayed to discover that the PSU that had been working with the new parts before, wouldn't run it anymore! I've tried it with both the PSU and mobo in the case, just the mobo out, and with both out of the case. Nothing works... No POST or anything.
So, I now determined that's it's unlikely to be a PSU issue after all and I RMA'd the mobo.
The replacement just came in. I put it all together and it still has the same problem...
The only place I can think of to turn to next is the CPU. This whole thing seems so damn rediculous though...
I'd really appreciate some help!
