System not detecting 9800GTX

Yesterday night, I took apart my 9800GTXs to take off the stock TIM and put on some AS5.... everything seemed to go perfectly smoothly - except when I put my HSF back together and put the card into my system, I got the speaker noise that indicates that I did not have a graphics card in the top PCI-E slot. I switched my top and bottom 9800s and the system booted up without any issues - but my bottom 9800GTX wasn't detected in windows.

Stumped, I booted from a USB disk and ran nvflash --list, and behold, only one of the cards was detected in the index. I tested all three slots with my working 9800GTX and also my spare 8400GS, and they work properly. I tried putting the non-working card in all the slots, but it still didn't work.

I tried reflashing the BIOS on my board, and cleared CMOS (I'm using BIOS P05p btw), and the card still didn't work.

So as a last straw, I threw the card into my second machine (E6750/P5K-SE), and the card got detected, and I installed the drivers. HL2 and Crysis both work without any hitches.

PSU came to my mind, but that really couldn't be because both cards used to work without any issues. And I've got a 750W Corsair.... should be plenty enough.

Has any encountered any issues like this before? I would like to resolve this myself if possible without having to drive an hour and a bit to the store to get a replacement and then driving the same amount back.

Well based on all the variables, your motherboard is suspect. You may have damaged it in some way. board still had some "juice" before you removed or installed it? Something along those lines? but even then its a mystery since other cards worked in all 3 slots

try removing all drivers and booting to vga mode with only the card that did not work and load latest drivers then add the second card
 
The motherboard isn't posting check the led readouts. If it goes straight to ff it means the cpu isn't being detected i.e. no other codes displayed before hand. If it shows c1 that is memory error. If it displays 1d it could be power supply. If it shows 7f that is a floppy error and your monitor is likely to blame since if it does 7f its booting fine; you press f1 and it goes to ff. So on...
 
I exchanged it, and working happily in SLi again :)
