System memory

I just picked up an MSI 790fx-GD70. The board takes DDR3 sticks and I don't have any. I don't want to buy more mem then I need.

I was wondering how much system memory I would need to run 4 GPU clients and an smp client?

I will be running 32bit WinXP(I don't have a 64bit disc) with a Phenom II X4. I'm guessing it would choke to death on just 2gig.

The key is you're using xp32, you could get by with 1gig and probably be fine.
AFAIK the gpu clients aren't going to be affected by system ram, and the smp client really won't either. You basically just need whatever overhead the os uses. If it's a dedicated boxen, I see no reason to use more than 1gb. 512mb would probably be cutting it awfully close. You could probably just run a single 1gb stick (vs 2 512's); obviously you won't be in dual channel mode but that doesn't really matter.

My A3 on my laptop is running ~150KB

I don't know about GPU as I don't have one running locally and would need to use logmein.com to get to and my client blocks that site for some reason or another.

With 4 GPU clients and 1 SMP2 client, you might be able to get away with 1GB. I think I remember reading here very recently someone using just 1GB.

Personally, I prefer to give it just a teeny bit more than it needs. My personal preference would be to go with 2GB. My rigs in my sig rig run with a minimum of 4 (at least for now).

Just pulled up task manager and my 2 gpu clients are using 150mb of system memory whilst running core_11, one should be OK but i'd go for 2 just to be on the safe side

ya, as larger A3's come out, and god only knows what GPU3 will bring, 2 Gigs would be the safer choice

A3 is about 150-200MB.
Each GPU is about 30-40MB.

1GB would probably be sufficient. More than 2GB would be overkill.

Just came across this. Only a little more than the 1GB price from the 'egg

He just let me know the price is negotiable for folders :D

I'm running four 9800GX2's with 1GB of ram on XP 32bit.
Read here for my issues.
But I think I found my problem. I have a 2GB stick of ram installed using a EDU version of XP.
The system only sees 1GB. I think I have a memory leak. I'm sure if I installed another XP that is NOT EDU version, I wouldn't have a problem.
