System login freeze up

I have a password protected longin in windows xp. When I boot to the xp login screen I can move my mouse around but as soon as I hit a key on my keyboard the mouse freezes and the keyboard does not work. The mouse icon still blinks which tells me that the computer is not completely locked up. I put in the recovery cd and replaces the kbdhid.sys file but that did not help. I have tries both usb and ps2 keyboards. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any solutions.. thank you for your time
