Just set myself up with a new system:

Q9450
MSI P7N Plat
8800GT SLI
750W PSU
Coolermaster 690 casing

... and I've noticed my room is significantly warmer, especially the area near my desk. I can feel heat radiating from my system, even when its idle. Everything is running at stock speeds, and while the entire setup is noisier than my previous one (E6300 in an antec sonata) its nowhere near the vacuum-like levels of my old Socket 754 Athlon 64.

Is there any way I can reduce the amount of heat generated by the system? I can udnerstand that it will generate heat, especially when I'm gaming in 1920 x 1200 goodness, but is it possible to throttle the system at idle?

Try to undervolt it a bit at your current clock settings... Or decrease your GPU clocks with ATI tool when the system is at idle to something obscene like 300mhz.

What do you expect when you're drawing about 300+ watts at full load? Get a fan or two in your room to cycle the air around or to draw fresh cool air in. I have the same problem for the last few years. Box fans help and they're cheap

1. Make sure Speedstep power saving for CPU is on.

2. Like someone said above, use software to downclock CPU voltages/GPU clocks/voltages.
Ati tool for gfx cards, and maybe Ntune to turn down CPU voltages, etc.

3. Turn of/disable unused devices like wireless NIC cards, firewire ports, etc. Won't help much tho...

4. It's too bad hybrid sli power is not yet enabled for your gfx cards, or else that would save a lot of electricity/heat...

i have 4 Pc's running in my 10'X10' room at all times, if the AC isn't on the room hits 100 easily..

However a few fans will be more than sufficient.

If all else fails just give your system some room to breath. That way the hot air exhuasting can flow away from your room. Position your workstation close to the room entrance can also help to equalize temps.

Unless you run your PC slower with reduced voltage or get less powerful components, you wont change its heat output hardly at all.
If your room is too hot, open a window.

Good thing I'm in vacation for the summer, but in the winter its nice with a 620W PSU at full load.

I figured that was a possibility but did a search and saw the OP doesn't have a single post in the DC forum.
I don't either, but I was down with SETI back in 1999.

Haven't run any DC lately, b/c PCs are too powerful nowadays, and you notice the extra heat and cost. :D

Ghetto duct the hot air out of your room. Extra style points for using an all cardboard solution :D
