System for DVD's on TV?

I wasn't sure where to put this post under "Displays", or here.

Is there anything small, standalone, cheap, low-power deice that will play DVD data (.vob) via HDMI, that I could leave near my TV? Sometimes I don't have time to watch movies so I copy them to my hard drive first before returning them, and because I don't always know what I might feel like watching that night. Right now I just plug my PC into my TV.. but that's getting kind of old. Eventually I'd like to get a PC dedicated to just my TV, but I'm waiting for newer hardware to come out, since I want my next build to be better than my PC now.

Currently a Panasonic Viera Plasma 42 inch. I forget the exact model #, though. Why? Just curious.. I'm assuming you're trying to see if I have DLNA or Wireless Display/Miracast?

Most of the newer Viera's (within the past few years at least) play MP4 and MKV just fine from USB using the built-in media player. Would still require you to use Handbrake or another application to encode your rips, though.

Just for playback of temporary VOBs, I would still invest in a reasonably priced media player with VOB support and HDMI-out. I'm happy with my cheap Patriot Box Office which plays pretty much anything (from USB, internal HDD, wireless DLNA & network shares), but it has been discontinued. Most of the WD players seem to get pretty good reviews.

Yeah.. it'll play mp4 (I'm pretty sure). I'm trying really hard not to have to encode *anything* though... it's that extra step that kills me. Otherwise, I if I was going to encode it, I could just use my Xbox (like I've been doing). Thanks for the suggestion though...
 
Some panasonic viera's will play VOB. I have a viera, but I didn't get the chance yet to see if it plays back--is your TV network-connected? If not, you can just dump the vob's to a usb stick, and play from there (hopefully that works).
