System failure caused by WD MyBook

Hello fellow enthusiasts,

I'm at a bit of a loss now on what to do. For the better part of 2 weeks now, I've been plagued with games that crash/reboot a few seconds into the menus (happened same way with AoC and CoD4), not to mention an occasional Windows crash. All this after upgrading my mobo, cpu, and ram a few weeks back.

I troubleshot just about everything, and even ended up getting new RAM as memtest was producing errors (I was almost certain I had found the problem). So I used my buddy's Crucial Ballistix sticks and what do u know....same bloody crashing issues!

So by now, I've dismounted the raid0, reformatted, and am running with only one stick. Crashes are still happening and I'm ready to just blame it on a defective mobo and replace it outright.....until....

today I triggered a windows crash as I was trying to access my MyBook external drive (which I always had plugged in and had no previous issues with), which made me think just maybe these crashes was somehow being caused by when it accesses the MyBook....although I could still access it many times and watch movies off of it even while i had these issues....

but it seems that fixed it now.....i can now make it further than the game menu's and so far these crashes are a thing of the past, but now i can't keep my MyBook plugged in or the problems will return....

anyone else encounter this elusive issue? i was literally going in circles until i even thought of troubleshooting my external drive....but while i'm glad i found the problem, i want my external drive back! anyone know how i could do this?
 
What operating system are you running? I had the same issues with some unique USB devices a long time ago... I simply tossed the devices since they were a PITA.

See if there is some sort of firmware update for that unit, if not, worse case is that you can either transfer the drive into another external case, or toss the drive inside your computer.

I vote for tossing the drive in your computer and running diag tools on it.
 
do other usb devices function properly?

It could also be a chipset issue ( i'd definately pull apart the mybook though and throw the hd inside the pc if possible)
 
thanks for the helpful advice but it turns out i'm an idiot....rushed to the conclusion too quickly that i had solved the issue but my system still crashes...

just flashed an updated bios and now seems stable...
