System Failed CPU Test

Help. I've had this system I built for almost 2 years now (maybe over).

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe Mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.0GHZ
512mb Corsair pc2700 ddr
WD Caviar SE HDD (80GB)
Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4200+
Antec SmartPower 350W PSU (came with Antec Performance II Tower Case)

The System has worked fine for a couple years, gaming alot, on 24/7 during colder months. A month ago I started getting this annoying bitch yelling through my speakers "System Failed CPU Test) and the machine would reboot after she repeated it a few times. I was at a loss, so I ended up pulling the Proc out and re-applying thermal paste. It worked ok again till yesterday. Now when I load a game (Doomsday engine, Doom 3, etc) it flips out till I exit the game, then shuts up. But sometimes it does say it once or twice while sitting in windows. I don't know what the heck's going on. I read pages upon pages of posts about this elsewhere, and everyone had a different system, and a different solution. Most however had an ASUS Mobo, and/or an Antec PSU. Some people thought the CPU wasn't getting enough power, and others thought the video card was eating too much. Anyone here know anything about this problem? It's getting annoying, and from what I've read I should go out and buy a new PSU, but don't see the point as Antec is pretty decent and the system has worked for years till now. Plus money isn't easy to come by.

EDIT: I should note that I started running Folding@home a month before this problem happened, then it would do it when folding was running. But folding ran for a month or a little more before this problem occured, and I only ran F@H at 50% CPU. Dunno if this is important.

Update though: Although tons of people seemed to have this problem on a lot of forums I've visited, I wanted to post, I fixed it by... wait for it...

...checking to see if the power connector from PSU -- > Mobo was connected tightly... It wasn't , somehow. So snapped it in place and bam no more problem. I'm so glad I didn't have to spend money to fix it. I always check all the mobo cables when I open my case, I think my connection just comes loose every once in a while of its own accord, probably due to some of my rounded cables which have pulltabs at the bottom. They seem to push the power connector out of the way.

He's for real, all new ASUS mobos have that feature, they are meant to be a guide to what system errors there are...

Personally I find them annoying, but you can change the messages with your own ones. Nice feature, but that bitch can get annoying every time you boot up (she says: "System completed power on self test. Computer now booting from operating system". And by then, Windows has almost finished loading anyway, so you can kinda see that its working :rolleyes: )


Anyway, back on topic, it was a power problem then, but for another reason. Man thats weird, I thought it wouldn't matter how good (as in well seated) the connection from the power to the mobo was, it would still work. Obviously not, I guess its another thing to be on the lookout for when building systems or helping others.

You can turn that off in your BIOS.
