System doesn't read > 137 GB

I just installed a 160GB HD on an AMD Sempron emachine with XP, to use as a backup drive. On my old Win98, it was only showing 137GB, and I knew that that was because of something I didn't have installed, but I just let it go. I thought on my new computer I would get the whole 160, but it still reports as 137. I ran a program called BigDriveEnabler, which apparently made some registry changes, but still 137.

What do I need to do to get those 23 GB? Thanks.
 
Yes, mine was exactly the same the stupid things :p

In computer management i had the extra space so i just added it as an extra partition - little anoying but it was a quick fix and i couldnt be assed to format or anyhing :p
 
You need Windows XP SP1 or newer, and an IDE controller and BIOS capable of 48-bit logical block addressing. Most likely the only thing you have to do is update to SP1.

If you went the registry way, then you can skip to what tanjO said, though I do recommend updating your Windows install to SP2 and the newest updates.
 
I believe you need to install xp w/ sp2 on a fresh hard drive that big. I don't think installing xp then updating to sp1 or sp2 will work. I may be wrong about this though, after all I'm a n00bie. (just look under my name)
Of course you should be able to use something like partition magic after you update to sp2... I think. :rolleyes:
or slipstream sp2 onto xp.
 
Installing XP then updating to SP1 will work. You just have to format the unused section of the disk. This is how I had to do it way back when HDs broke the 137 GB barrier and I got a 160. ;)

SP1 enables 48-bit LBA (without you having to go into the registry and changing some things around).

But yes, installing XP with a slipstreamed Sp1/SP2 will work too, and you can create a single partition > 137 GB if you want in that case.

Thanks. I'm not sure what level SP-wise this XP is. I've been using 98se for years and XP is new to me. I was wanting to make a partition anyway of about the 160 - 137 = 23 size to backup the operating system to. (I'm going to try using XXClone, after having good results in 98se with XXCopy.)

So I guess I'll find out soon if I'll be able to make a partition with the extra space.
