System crawls when transferring to USB drive

I am catching up on past seasons of The Walking Dead and when I transfer the files to the thumb drives my system almost grinds to a halt. It doesn't freeze completely, but even opening something as simple as notepad can take anywhere from 20-60 seconds. It's like my Core i7 becomes a Pentium. Drivers are all up to date and I am not having any others problems with this system.

The thumb drives I am using are different makes and one is USB 2.0 and the other 3.0 and I experience the same issue with both.
 
different ports, or happens in all ports?

check windows is CPU or DIsk usage high?
