I will OC and utilize SATA, PCI-E, S939, non-SLI
Value is of concern and this is my first build

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra, $143

OR

ASUS A8V-E Deluxe VIA K8T890, $149

$163-184
so would it be wiser to get a 128MB 6800GT or 256MB X800XL, I cannot find any 128MB X800XL GPUs, I’ve read 256MB is unnecessary and slower
Only the 6600GT core clock and memory clock with 500MHz and 1000MHz respectively were of any interest within a considerable price range
which brand? eVGA, XFX, PROLINK, CHAINTECH, GIGABYTE, Leadtek, MSI, ASUS, JATON
Would you think that a mobo and video card with the same brand would run more efficiently

Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 512KB, $207—199 monarch
Venice or San Diego, 512kB or 1MB L2, I think I’ll stick with the 512 for now

2X Crucial 512MB DDR400, $39 each

Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 73GB SATA 10000 RPM, $174

Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA 7200RPM, $125

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827131338
Plextor PX-716A, $110
No need for SATA since both interfaces are fast enough to support the top read and write speeds anyway
Do you think it is worth it with drives half the cost, also how is the plextor software

AMS Genesis CF-Q45-1 Steel ATX Full Tower, $38
I do plan on modding this baby

PROMISE FastTrak TX2200 PCI-X SATA RAID 0/1 JBOD, $64
What is PCI-X interface
Not too familiar with these, I assume to get one that my mobo supports, also would like one compatible with Linux distros

PSU, $60-100
Need to do some calculations and confirm on other components first

Fans, $10-20
What should I consider RPM, size, airflow (cfm), I don’t think I’ll mind the noise

Total: $1200
I haven’t looked everywhere for the best prices yet; this is just a general setup

Go for the NF4, its the better of the two chipsets. The RAM, that specific crucial RAM will not OC worth a shit. You need some high clocking ram that will do at least 250mhz for a nice OC on a 9x multiplier chip. I recommend Crucial's BALLISTIX or some TCCD based RAM. Patriot XBL, OCZ Platinum Rev2, or Mushkin 2-2-2 ram is all good, and will run around 180-220$, but to OC its worth it. There are some budget OCing RAM chips like UTT that need high voltage (3v+) but thats not guarnateed to run at anything past its advertised speed, whereas TCCD will do 250FSB no problem.

Yes, there are no 128MB XL's but thats for a good reason. More and more games are using 256MB of RAM and youll need it int he future. 256MB of ram being slower than 128MB was and is old news from back in the 9800 PRO days, not 256MB is almost standard. go for the XL.

And make sure you save up for a nice power supply, dont trust PSU's that come with cases.

DONT get the SATA card

you dont need it

both motherboards you picked have SATA RAID

but go with the first since its better (MSI board)

video:
the 256MB X800XL would be better to get (im pretty shure, correct me if im wrong)

fans:
get the biggest (120MM) fans that push the most airflow that you can since you dont mind the noise, your case only has spots for 80MM fans..but you said youd be modding ;)

Get the DFI NF4 Ultra-D since you are overclocking. For video card I would get an X800XL.

For RAM you can get UTT or TCCD/TCC5. The UTT can reach ~260 and higher with tight timings, but you need to push quite a bit of voltage through it which you may be uncomfortable with and you should actively cool your RAM with thgat much voltage.

If you don't want to use UTT because you would be unconfortable with that get some OCZ Platinum Rev 2. with is TCC5.

Don;t waste your money with that drive either. Just get a NEC 3520A.

Also why did you choose that case? If you want a cheap one Cooler Master has a nice one on newegg.

For PSU go to the PSU forum and look at the sticky.

Initially I was leaning toward the MSI board, but I’d still like more info regarding the chipsets regarding comparisons. Is the 10k RPM raptor worth the money? Is there a noticeable speed difference.

After much deliberation, I've decided to go with the XL
W/16 pipelines and 256b memory interface, how can I refuse

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145520
2X CORSAIR XMS 512MB 2-2-2-5 TCCD 2.75V, $94 each

OR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227203
2X OCZ Gold Series 512MB 2-2-2-5 3.2V, $85 each

The NEC 3520A are a bargain but I'm wondering if the cache size really makes a difference

The mobos are integrated with RAID, that makes me feel like a dumb @ss

I would get the DFi mobo and then get some cheap UTT like the Mushkin at outpost.

someone else give the call on that one

and the raptor is good...put your OS and all your games on it...use the 250GB hdd for storage

oops..sorry for double post..ment to hit edit

How's this

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
ENERMAX 535W, +12V1, +12V2 @ 20A, 24pin
ATI X800XL
3200+ Venice
WD raptor 10k 73GB
Seagate Barracuda 250GB
2X CORSAIR XMS 512MB 2-2-2-5 TCCD

Will my SATA 150 drives work with SATA2
How's the RAM, I've been reading about compatibility issues regarding the mobo

I thought about ordering today, but it's probably best not to jump
My class starts tomorrow with perfect timing sarcastically speaking

Thus far, total sums to $1300
Perhaps $1100 is possible

The nForce 4 chipset supports SATA2 but your drives do not so they only run SATA1 speeds. There is no compatibility issue there.

Compatibility issues with RAM are primarily dependent upon the CPU considering the memory controller is integrated on-die of the CPU with Athlon 64's. I prefer OCZ RAM myself but as long as that Corsair has TCCD then you should fine.

It looks great to me. I don't kinow how well the CORSAIR XMS overclocks, but it is TCCD.
