I remember when NASs first came out they were slow and iffy (thecus/buffalo). Now they seem more robust across the board. How is Synology in general? I am looking at the DS411+ or DS1010+ to replace my current jbod setup. I'll probably be investing in this during the fall/winter of this year. Predictable and non-error prone operation are my top priorities.

Other features important are
  • OLRCE/OLRM
  • Hot spare option
  • Read/Write speed
  • Excellent CPU for parity calculations (no bottleneck)
I've also been considering ReadyNAS but have had lots of problems in the past with netgear products. I know they acquired readynas, but have they mucked up the product line since the takeover? Thanks for your insights.

I've always heard/read good things about Synology's products...at least the mid-upper range stuff.

We just purchased a Buffalo TeraStation 4TB NAS at work; I set it up today and was quite pleased with it. Came packed with 4x1TB Samsung drives in RAID5. The speed was decent and configuration was pretty straightforward; time will tell about the long-term reliability.
