Raid 5? 6? 10?

Now that I have a 1517+ and three 4TB drives coming, what's my best choice?

Usage will be, well, everything. Music/Video streaming, file storage, backup, etc.... backup will not be final backup, just live daily backups.

The Synology Raid format sounds pretty awesome. Any downsides ?

SHR is just RAID 5. It depends on what you want? You want maximum capacity? You want fault tolerance? What's your priority? Redundancy?

Regardless, SHR is the most appropriate in most cases. It gives you some fault tolerance while sacrifying some capacity.

No apparent downsides in my experience.

My 2 cents.

Well, my assembly of things was delayed by things out of my control for a few weeks, but it's together and running.

Not that there was much to it.

3 X 4TB IronWolfs in SHR.

Got the admin and first account, volume, share, etc... all set up no issues.

I went ahead and ordered 2 more IronWolfs to fill the last 2 slots. wth. why not LOL

Pulling 90-105 MB Sec. That's just under Gigabit saturation so nothing to complain about there.

We use SHR for all of our Synologies that we use for backup storage. Works well, never had any issues because of the raid format.

Looks like it is going to work well for you, with those speeds too.
