Hey all,

Just thought I'd post a comment / question on the Synology DS1511+ disk station. We have a customer who edits photos for schools, and recently switched them over to a DS1511+ diskstation.
They used to be on a Win2k8 server with onboard RAID0 setups for their shared drives, and moved them to a RAID5 w/ 5x WD RE4 1TB drives.

The problem is this: when mulitple users try to read files in the same directory, every once and a while windows / whatever program will pop up a 'file not found' message. The user clicks back or opens it again - and it's there. This really sucks for the users, cause they edit hundreds of photos a day, and tends to piss them off. Nothing like implementing a solution that causes them more grief.

I've emailed synology support on multiple occasions, but now just get the response "if theres anything more we can help you with, please let us know". Well, fix the damn problem with the disk stations.

Anyways, NetJunkie here recommended these diskstations as he has used them a lot in his home lab or whatever - in the real world, they crap out cause they can't host files properly for multi-user environments.

I've done all the obvious troubleshooting steps - latest firmware, etc.. The only thing I can think of is changing the filesystem from ext4 to ext3.. but synology support won't help me with that.
We have a unit in stock that we're playing with (that we'll probably send back) a long with about 3 other units - anyone got any ideas on something else we can try?

This looks like a network problem.

Are the end-users pointing to a static ip? or to a hostname?

If they are pointing to a hostname, and they only are using a cheap consumer router in their network then this will happen.

My suggestion is to give the Synology a static IP and change all user links to the IP itself.

Remember that with the addition of the synology you are adding a *nix box to the network, and *nix machines dont always play nice with Windows clients when it comes to networking, especially when you dont have a real DNS present on the network.

Users point to the static IP of the synology disk station. We have HP Procurve 1810G-24 switches in place.

We have full fledged servers on the internal network, DNS, WINS - it isn't a name resolution problem.

I have recreated this on two other 1511's at the shop that were going to go out to customers. We bought them + the drives before the HDD price hike.

The disk stations themselves are flakey.. say if we set eth0 to 192.168.1.1 and eth1 to 192.168.1.2.. and ONLY plug in eth0 port... you can still ping and connect to both IPs. (which, still hasn't been explained to me by support). And yes, we're using the IP of the configured interface that's physically connected.

This may / may not be related to how Samba does file locking, are you able to change the smb.conf file in any way?
