I have been trying to setup a Promise SX6000 raid controller today, I have 6 WD 120GB 8MB that I'm trying to use, I noticed that they are all the same size but they different model numbers

When i try to initialize the array via cards bios it either will sit at 0% but one time it got to 2% and then the status indicated that it was "critical"

so i opted to NOT initialize the array via the cards bios but through windows after a couple of attempts that worked and after a couple of attempts i completed a quick format

now i'm try to transfer files onto the partition and it will work for a few minutes then stop

i was thinking that one of my drives is bad, what do you guys think?
 
Have the drives been used before you built the array.
If yes then.
Has the card got the option of formating each drive in the bios.
If so then plug each one in in turn and format it.
If not the download a disk checker and low level format each drive.
Once the drives are formated then try and rebuild the array.

the card doenst have an option of formatting in the bios, 4 of the drives have been used before and 2 are brand new

can you give me the name of an app that can format drives individually through a raid controller

card = pos
endless problems with raid 5 array
sent back 2x
using any driver set for the card
win2000 server, novell, or debian never worked right or stable
using 6 120gb WD drives

switched to adaptec card
array stable for 1.5 years now
 
if you can live with only 4 drives, then go swap for a tx4000. it's much more stable. or get a real hardware raid card. 3ware or adaptec will do you.
 
Highpoint has a rocketraid 454. supposed to do raid five like a charm.. I think tomshardware.com has an article. check them out.

Please note, i'm not an expert though...
 
ok guys I think im going to send go aheard and send this card back i cant get it to work

what other options do i have, i was think about going to SATA and i need atleat 600Gigs
 
In order of preference for SATA and ATA RAID 5 hardware cards.

1. 3ware 9000 family (SATA)
2. 3ware 8000 family (SATA)
3. 3ware 7000 family
4. Adaptec SATA RAID card
5. LSI Logic ATA RAID card
6. Adaptec ATA RAID card
7. Promise SX4000
8. Promise TX4000
9. Promise SX6000
10. HighPoint Rocket Raid 454

There is a LSI Logic SATA RAID card, but I have yet to see a review of it.

Unknown: There is a company (i forget the name) fairly new on the market that makes a proprietary RAID 3 controller that is suposed to be very fast.. wish I could remember the name of it right now.

It is fairly new, so I doubt you will find much on it, but it looks to me like it is just a SX4060 (ATA-133 version of the SX4000) with SATA bridges.

I'm using the SX4 card in one of my computers, and it is a descent performer, although CPU usage is usually around 25%. I'm sure there are better options available, but it does what I need, and has given me no problems.

let me know how that card works out, i need a raid card about that size... it's about $200 cheaper, and 2 channels less than the 9500s-mi which I was looking at. might be worth it.
 
The unknown is a Netcell 5103 SATA board. 5 port RAID XL (proprietary hybrid RAID3). Have one in my older system. Avg. CPU stays around 2% or less. Very nice performer, that has one advantage over all other RAID cards. Windows auto detects card and all drives on it, as a single IDE HD. No drivers needed. I've seen it auto rebuild array a few times, gotta quit knocking connectors loose when I'm messing around in there. Not a bad deal at $249.
