Hey all. I'm trying to build a spare gaming rig that'll play WoW and SWTOR at my monitors resolution at decent frame rates. This rig will be for when my homies cruise over and wanna LAN. $300 budget, but would help if it was cheaper. Looking forward to your input. Thanks. *Edited the type of RAM I have and I"m gonna use my Caviar Black 640GB HDD from my main rig.

knowing what type and speed of ram you will be reusing will narrow down what motherboards you can use

A decent 500GB (or larger) HDD and video card (to max everything out) for your resolution would each cost around $100. What are you looking for in terms of storage capacity and gameplay?

And what type of RAM do you have?

Well heres what I got not that it's the best rig ever and it's technically over your budget before mail in rebates

By going with an LGA 1155 you wouldn't be too far behind in the whole upgrade department if you ever decide to do that. WIth sandy bridge and Ivy bridge both using it then it would allow you to possibly further the life expectancy of the computer maybe even a few more years if theres other games later on that you want to play with your Homies.

CPU Intel Pentium G620 Sandy Bridge 2.6GHz LGA 1155 $69.99

MOBO ASRock Z68M/USB3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 $84.99
I've never used or heard of ASRock before so I can't say whether they are good or not. There were cheaper ones that didn't support ddr3-1600 memory which are also options that may or may not work
Either way this is still a z68 board which I believe shouldn't have any of the problems that p67 boards have.
PSU CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 $69.99 (W/ $20 Mail-in rebate it's $49.99)
The minimum requirements for the Videocard below say it requires a 400w PSU. If a PSU is rated at 600w and has a power effeciency of 80% then I believe that means it's more like a 480w PSU. Going with a lesser one is also an option but your mileage may vary
The corsair psu's also have a save 15% with the input of a promo code which would bring the price down by another $10.50 as well and would potentially bring the price down below the $300 mark after mail in rebates.
DVD SAMSUNG Black 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA $13.99

GPU HIS H667FS1G Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 $69.99 (W/$15 Mail in rebate it's $54.99)

Subtotal of $308.95
Tax $21.64
Shipping $9.02
Total $339.61 (304.61 after Mail in rebates)
promo code CorsairPSUJan12 -10.50
Grand total $294.11

In theory everything is pretty decent but not great. In order to get it near that price it's using brands that may not be as reputable but the more reputable brands don't offer solutions at the price point your looking at. The PSU might be a little overkill for the system but I don't think it is. Looking at comparable AMD Solutions didn't get as low as this one either. If you had a spare PSU to use then it would afford you the ability to go with more reputable brands.

I tried searching for other oem processors but if you don't have a CPU cooler laying around then that is just extra money that you would need to spend on one which could cost more.

IF you had ddr 2 memory then it would be a lot cheaper since you could go with an aging LGA 775 system. or even if you had ddr3 1333 memory laying around there are cheaper z61 boards around

If the only thing this computer would be used for is friend usage for WoW and SWTOR, you could probably cut out the DVD drive and save a few bucks there. If installing Windows is the only thing you'll use the drive for, you could pull the drive out of your main rig, and use that then swap it back when you're done.

Just a suggestion.
