Switching to Bonic

So with the recent drought in SMP Work Units for F@H, I'm thinking of switching to BONIC and helping our fellow members in that aspect. Can anyone let me know how well a s939 X2 4400+ @ 2.35Ghz will do running BONIC? Moreover, if it's worth it, can anyone help me through the setup? I didn't see any guides stickied about BONIC (I know it's not officially supported by Hardforum).

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Drought isnt that bad, I havn't made it past 6 tries until I get work, last night and tonight on new setups. As for BOINC, I cant help you there but I know some people here can

Run it for a few WU's and let us know. BOINC is easy to setup compared to F@H SMP/GPU. Night and day.

The hardest part about BOINC is selecting which project (out of the dozens available) you want to attach to. :D

It's all good.

[H] is currently pushing on the QMC project, join in.

Here is a Q&D setup procedure. I swear there was a real good howto thread on here, but its buried too far down now. But its not too bad, the hardest part is deciding which projects you want to contribute to. :D

Your proc will do fine on BOINC. The standards for what is still "useful" are a lot lower with a lot of those projects than with F@H.

Regarding F@H SMP I've let it gone to 11 attempts four times already and still nothing. Should I be running any specific flags to get WU? I thought my 4400 was pretty crappy so I just kept everything stock (normal wu size and no -advmethods).

I'll keep reloading SMP for the next couple days, but if I don't get a WU by Monday, I'm switching to BONIC. I was using the uniproc client for a while, but that's not worth the 170 ppd. As of now, I'll just keep my 9600GT running F@H and have my CPU possibly switch to BONIC.

Lehmann, I know you guys need me folding, especially with EVGA nipping at our heels, but I can't do anything if I'm not getting any WUs... That's why I'm considering the switch.

Thanks CraftyOtter and alan for pointing me in the right direction for BONIC. I'll read up on it.

Large and advmethods would give you a larger pool to pull from, just FYI

But can my 4400 run it? I remember when the Q6600 came out and everyone was like, "now we can finally take advantage of SMP". That's when people started to run large and advmethods. I've always though my dual core AMD @ 2.35 wouldn't complete large, advmethods units in time.

EDIT: Just enabled advmethods and I got a WU. I guess you were right. Now let's hope I can finish it in time.

I have had several SMP2 clients waiting for WU's over the past few days. I gave up and swicthed them over to Berkeley's BOINC (boink). Makes my feel better that my donation is being put to good/consistant use.

I've also had numerous F@H GPU WU's unable to return results due to no record of said WU existing ......... It came from somewhere .......

I'm all for what Stanford is doing and has done but Berkeley is going it better at the moment.

Come on Stanford, regain your grip on your creation or lose it. :D

Fight fight fight!

BOINC is very, VERY simple to use. Your 9600gt can also go into use for a lot of projects. All projects are "worth it" considering they are your spare CPU and GPU cycles. You inevitably choose which projects you would like to donate your extra resources towards.

Well, so my SMP WU finally finished a frame... my socket 939 X2 4400+ @ 2.35Ghz is doing 23 min 20 second TPF. HFM is reporting 786 ppd, which I suppose is better than the 160 ppd I was getting with the uniproc client.

crazyjayz - If you decide to run some BOINC units we would welcome the help. There are tons of great projects that are currently running on that client. You wont have to worry much about getting work on a BOINC project. It gives you lots of options as far as how many WUs to download at once and you can always have it run more than one project at a time. Suffice it to say there is minimal maintenance. :)

If you need any help let us know. Here is the download page. Once you download run the installer and just make sure to uncheck the "screen saver option" during the install. Then it will ask you to reboot and then it will ask you to attach to a project. As mentioned above a bunch of us are currently running QMC@home. Also the default viwew of the client is very basic so using the "advanced view" gives you more info and your WUs.

The issue with trying to get WU's with the SMP2 client appears to have gotten better as my desktop hasn't gone more than 3 retries trying to get new WU's since yesterday.

The X2 is a dual-core processor, did you have two uniprocessor clients running before you installed the SMP client? Asking because the PPD seems a bit low for two clients and that processor.

No, that was only 1 client. With 2 I would assume 300 ppd. My SMP right now is now showing 655 ppd on HFM after 4 frames. 26 min 27 sec TPF. So I'm getting a little more than double the ppd I got with uniproc clients.

I figure you will see between 300-450 PPD depending on the WU, but you would need to configure the clients to receive specific types of WUs worth more. That said, yes the SMP client is much better than even two standard clients. Better still would be the GPU client for that vintage system, because your PPD will be up to 10X higher than what you're getting with SMP2 depending on the card and WU.

Can someone change the thread name to BOINC? It's driving me crazy...

Yeah, the 9600 is awesome for folding.

Yeah, the 9600 is awesome for folding.

My bad about the thread title. Funny, we just had another thread that made reference to the name. Seems as though I can never get it right, haha.

Oh, and yeah, my 9600GT does about 3500 ppd. Did closer to 4500 when heavily OC'ed, but it started to EUE, so I brought it back down to Superclocked numbers.

Okay, so it's all settled out now. Just pushed the OC up to 2.5Ghz, and HFM is showing ~700 PpD on P6012. Anyway, this should put me above 4k PpD, which is a 20% bump for me.
