Switching to alternate DNS server

We have two DNS servers listed in our network adapter properties. When one server is unavailable, it is not switching over to the alternate. We have to manually go into the properties and remove the first one and move the alternate up. Flushing and registering the DNS does not seem to work.

My last recourse is to push out the DNS via DHCP and see if that works. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing else I could do before having to touch 200 computers.

thats a bit odd, it should time out on the first DNS then switch to the second DNS. It will slow things down a bit but should still work.

are you sure the problem is client side and not on that second DNS server?

it sounds like its functional when you manually change it but just thinking out loud :)

why would it be on the server side if it works perfectly when he puts in the ip of his alternate into the primary field on the client?

dns servers dont handle any sort of fail-over protocols do they?

^ DNS redundancy is usually handled in the client or with a layer 7 load balancer.

I have a feeling the 1st server is responding, just with either garbage or incomplete data, so the client "thinks" it's getting an answer, so it has no need to ask the secondary. I would put a sniffer on a client and see what data is being returned from the 1st server or setup yet another dns server and see if the condition persists.

You're probably getting either servfails or nxdomains fed back to clients which is why it's not switching to the second server. It only switches to the second server if the first doesn't respond at all.
