Switching the memory on vid cards??

Heyas, I was thinking about this the other day while I was totally bored at work.


On my radeon 9800pro the ram chips made by hynix are not the fastest ones they make with the bga attachements.

So, the thought popped into my head that what if we could get the faster memory chips, that have the same bga layout and same voltage and just plop them onto the card.

If all the pins did the exact same thing and required all the same exact voltages I think this could be done. Other then the hard part of trying to get bga chips unsoldered and soldered back onto the boards.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

probably works better in theory than reality.

Talk to somebody who's done SMT soldering before, it'd be damned near impossible to do by hand and more likely to fuck up your card than actually leave it in working condition.

Add that to the fact that you can't just walk into CompUSA and get of a box of video RAM...

wouldnt be worth it... say you take some FX 5950 ram and put it on a 9800XT, the difference wouldnt be too noticeable since the latencys and stuff are much higher...

I figured the soldering would be pretty darn hard by hand.

Does anyone know if latency really affects video cards that much?


I just could never understand why some of the Geforce cards have these huge bandwidth memory chips and the ATI cards are stuck back using slower chips.
