Sorry if this is answered but my internet is slowwwww and I couldn't find the answer in the "anwer" thread.

I have an inspiron 5160 with a cheap 30gb 4k2rpm hdd and want to upgrade it to a 80gb 5k4rpm hdd. My question is what will let me take my 30gb worth of info and throw it on my new 80gb hdd?

I will get a external enclosure to make the file transfer then switch the two hdd's so the 80gb is the one in my pc.

Why bother with an external enclosure instead of just installing the new one internally?

For that matter, why not just put 4200 & 5400 RPM? It'd be 4.2k or 5.4k anyway, not 4k2 and 5k4. Not abbreviated in the first place, and wrong way to do it even if you were going to. 10000 and 15000 RPM are commonly abbreviated as 10k and 15k RPM, has to do with significant digits and orders of magnitude.
 
I purchased a program called EZ-Drive a number of years ago so that I could clone hard drives. Just attach the new drive to an IDE cable, boot from the floppy, select the source and destination and copy.
The limited version of EZ-Drive came with hard drives a few years back for the purpose of copying the contents of the old drive to the new one, but was locked to the new drive, that's the reason I bought the retail program so I could clone any IDE drive to any brand drive.

Ghost works great too, but you have to install it and then run it in windows.

Retail drives from a few years ago to today usually come with a bootable CD to do drive cloning as well, really simple to use and only takes about 20 minutes or less to clone a 40gig drive on a quick PC.

Thanks, Ill look into ezdrive and ghost. I don't have internet capable of downloading at the moment which is why I need to so. My current drive has all the patches and updates for games, windows, etc...
