I'm on Windows 7 and I'm switching for an AMD quad core and AMD based motherboard over to an Intel based motherboard and chip. Will reformatting be necessary or will Windows pick up new drivers and operate without a hitch between the hardware switch?

Try and uninstall any chipset drivers first and reboot then shut down. It should let you convert to intel without issues after that.

fps4ever is probably alluding to this when he said uninstall chipset drivers but I would uninstall EVERY driver that is specific to that AMD motherboard and, as mentioned when you reboot with your new CPU/motherboard, Win 7 should ask for all new drivers for every aspect of that new motherboard.

Windows 7 is pretty awesome about hardware changes.

If it were me, I'd spent the time backing up my important data. Then just swap the hardware. That way, if it all works, you at least have an updated backup, if it doesn't then just take the extra time to go ahead and reinstall Windows.
