right now im running

a7n8x-dlx
2100+ XP
ocz 2x256 (pc2700, cpu-z says its pc3200 for some reason)
and other crap :).

i was just wondering if i could pop out my 2100+ and just put in a 2500+ barton. i was thinking about buying a whole new setup (p4 2.8c, 2x512 pc3300, p4p800-dlx), but i think this little upgrade might be good enough for now.

You shouldn't need to format at all. Just reset your CMOS, it's the only part of the computer that cares how fast the proc. is. Also, unless you plan to overclock, that's not a very significant upgrade.

yeah i know, but i was planing to OC it. my other question is that, if cpu-z is right saying that its pc3200, would it be alright to go buy a 2.8c + asus p4p800 with that ram and try to OC the 2.8?

i wouldnt trust the OCZ ram. go out and buy some quality ram than after that you can buy a new processor. and do not try to OC a 2.8c with pc2700 OCZ ram........

You can OC with that RAM, but unless it really is PC3200 it might not go very far, at least not with decent timings or without a nasty divider.

i think im going to go out today and buy the parts. im still undecided which ram to go with though, maybe someone could help.

-PC3200 512M DDR400/CL3 (Kingston) - $149ea

-Kingston HyperX 2x512 PC3200 - $Have to call them.

-CORSAIR 512 X2 DUAL CHANNEL 1G KIT TWINX 1024-3200C2 - $355

Anyone have any experiance with Transcend? I see some 1024 MB PC3200 Dual DDR .Transcend CAS 2.5 on sale for $270

or would you guys recommend a a64 3000+ + k8v/kv8/AN50R? Which i think im kind of leaning to, since all the benchmarks show this beating a p4 3.2c. Are there any huge downfalls to the a64?

grab a 2500+ mobile barton athlonxp. they're overclocking to 2.6Ghz easily (3600+)
