Alrite im doing some system upgrading in my home. I have Vector Linux running on an old machine which is going to be upgraded as a resulf of other upgrades. anyway i dont want to reinstall every thing that is running on that machine. It acts as a content filtering server for my home network. so my main question is can i just swap the hard drives into its replacement or do i need to re install everything?

if all the binaries are compiled for i386 and you are using a kernel of recent vintage then there is a 95% chance it will work.*

*this stat made up but you get the point

If you do have an issue...

You can also just compile a new kernel with options for the new hardware, throw it on the grub/lilo list, swap hardware, boot into the new kernel, and you're good to go.

Or you could change hardware, boot to a live cd, chroot into the system, compile a new kernel, edit grub/lilo, reboot into new kernel, and you're good to go.

Programs won't have to be recompiled, the only issue would be hardware support from switching components.
