I have to say that I am quite impressed with the change.

I went from:

Athlon XP 4200+
Zalman 9500 CPU Cooler
Asus Crosshair Motherboard
2 GB Corsair XMS Ram
BFG Geforce 8800 GTS OC 640 MB
250 GB Maxtor 7,200 RPM Hard Drive
Thermaltake 850 W Modular Power supply
to:

Intel E2180 @ 3.0 ghz (300X10) @ 1.425 V
Artic Freezer 7 CPU Cooler
Abit P35 Motherboard (regular, not pro)
2 GB GSkill Ram
WD Raptor 150 GB (Plenty of space as I have the other drive plus my server for data storage/backup)
Everything else remains from my other system.

I have to say that it is quite a bit faster than my old setup. This is my first successful attempt at overclocking, and i have to say that I am highly in favor of the benefits that it provides.

I know this is not considered much of an upgrade to most on here, however I am extremely happy. I am student trying to finish up a degree in IT, so I can't afford a Quad Core until the prices come down a little. Just wanted to share my excitement!:D
 
Grats on your upgrade. Perhaps the majority of the noticeable speed increase came from the raptor 150? I know I put a 75gb raptor into one of my older systems and left everything else the same, and man was it lots more responsive. Snappy is about the best word I can think of to describe the feel of the OS.

Lots of people knock the raptor because of the price to storage ratio. But you just can't beat it, especially if you store all your extra stuff on a second drive, like movies, mp3's, etc.
 
Thanks! Yeah, I am sure some of the speed increase came from the Raptor hard drive, but not all of it. I had a system about 2 years ago with a 75Gb Raptor in it and I liked a lot as well, so I wanted another one. :)

I agree with you about people knocking the Raptor's due to the price to storage ratio. I actually purchased the Raptor on an impulse while I was purchasing a desk at Fry's Electronics. When the guy was looking over my receipt at the door, he said "Wow, this is expensive for a 150GB drive. I just purchased a 1TB drive a week ago for the same price." I laughed and said have a nice day.
 
You're major speed increase is from the cpu, but that raptor will help you access your data a bit faster

Agreed,the Raptor 150 is one of the best upgrades one can make.
 
I was an AMD fan since I started building computers for fun. Now since the Core 2s came out, I'm an Intel junky.:(
 
I switched from an AMD X2 4200+ to a Q6600. What is strange is that my X2 setup was fast running "Save As" for Videoredo. The Q6600 gets dragged down by that process for some bizarre reason making the whole computer unusable.

In the real world ? I'll take far lower access time over the other drive any day.I own two of each,and the Raptor is definitely more 'snappy' on the desktop,and in games,etc.

Access time on the first 100GB or so should be similar to the Raptor's.
