Switch to LCD??

I have a sony GDM-F400 19" monitor. It was probably the best 19" at it's time and til this day I still love this monitor. But it's just taking up so much space on my desk. Should I switch to a DELL 2001FP? What would you guys do? any ideas?

It's been said so many times that it's all personal preference we should have a sticky that says just that in the title. =0)

For the time being, it really matters on what you put as your priorities when looking for an LCD, do you want better color, brightness, response time, warranty, backlighting?

I game quite a bit and couldn't be happier with my 172x.

I was on a 17" Sony CPD-200GS monitor that died on me (can't complain...almost 6 years of service and countless moves between colleges and home). I opted for the Viewsonic VP171b LCD monitor....at the time it was the sweetspot of the price/performance point (cost 420 with shipping, one of the only 16ms LCDs at the time under the 1k barrier). Part of the reason was what you mentioned, the space. Another was that my room setup pretty much guarantees a lot of glare. I was and still am more than happy with the step up to LCD. Picture quality on the whole was outstanding (despite the general limitations of LCDs), the display was very crisp and very bright....I noticed a difference in the lack of eyestrain after long sessions.....I'd say go for it, especially considering how good the 2001fp is. I almost pulled the trigger on one yesterday with the sale, but stumbled on the HP L2335 23" 16ms, and I'm gonna wait till next week and order that instead.

Be warned, though....if you are a hardcore gamer...as in you spend hours trying to squeeze every single possible fps out of your system, or you constantly try to get the absoute top level IQ from your system, you probably will be disappointed. Best bet if you have the chance is find someone with an LCD and run the programs you would run on it and see if the quality is acceptable....if that's possible.

Might want to read up on the subject a bit before you go around posting this stuff. There are plenty of LCDs out there that can handle hardcore gaming. My Dell 1800FP does a fine job.

Some 17" and 19" LCDs are able to play games without ghosting now but you're limited to 1280x1024 resolution. Going from a 19" CRT to either of those LCDs sound like a step backwards since all 19" CRTs can do 1600x1200 at least. If you don't play any games at 1600x1200 then I guess this point doesn't really matter. Video cards will only get faster so being limited to 1280x1024 for a few years down the road doesn't sound good to me.

Heh, you make it sound like playing a game in 1280x1024 is horrible. It's not like 640x400 or some poop like that. Maybe I'm just not needing that extra FPS and believing I actually notice when I don't get it. LCD are prettier, save a hell of a lot more space, lighter for moving purposes, and don't heat up as bad as CRT most times because of the second reason and how desks are designed. I get no ghosting whatsoever on any games I play and when I get an upgrade in the vid card area, I know I'll be able to play anything that comes out great for the next few years to come.

NOT! recommended for fast games in my opinion unless your eyes are retarded and u can't see blur. Good for everything else.
