A friend of mine has a cable modem connected to a wired router. He has 175 feet of cat5e going from that router to the xbox360 in his bedroom. He also has a computer in his bedroom, so he has to unplug the cable from his Xbox to plug it into his computer to get online.

Should he get a switch to split that connection between the Xbox and PC or would he need another wired router? Or would neither work?

if you have a router, using a switch will extend the router's port capabilities.

/oops was on a phone call while posted came in late

EDIT: Just noticed he said the 175ft wire is running from a router. Yes, a switch will be sufficient.
