Switch from RAID 1 to RAID 0?

I have my rig setup in RAID 1 right now, but am thinking of switching to RAID 0. Will I have to completely start over with a clean install, or can I simply change the array in the BIOS and go? If I can't do it that way, how would you suggest I go about the switch?

Thanks

You can't just say switch.

How to go about it? either back everything up and reinstall, or just give up. I'd be going toward option B myself.

Depends what you use your puter for. If you just play games and watch movies then either leave Raid 1 or run them seperately outside raid. If you do lots of work with large files then Raid-0 might be for you.

But if your going to switch you have to format both drives so you'd have to back everyhting up beforehand.

it depends on your raid controller. Most likely you cannot 'switch', you have to
  • backup
  • destroy RAID-1
  • Create RAID-0
  • Fromat
  • Restore

Keep in mind your not going to gain anything in real world speeds, but you will be going from Safe Data to Risky Data.

As others have stated, your going to have to re-create the array, so your data should be backed up first.

There are very very very few controllers that support this, but some do allow you to go from a single disk (like 1 disk from your RAID 1 array) to a RAID 0 array. Although as others have suggested, you should stick with what you have. RAID 0 is a disaster waiting to happen and it's not going to help you much.
