At my company I have a 20/20mb fiber internet connection from Qwest. In my server room i have a cisco switch provided by qwest with a copper hand off. The copper port on the qwest switch is set to 100Full. Connected to the qwest switch, i have mine, a HP Procurve 2510-24. The manual for the HP procurve says:

"If the connected device has a fixed configuration, for example 100Mbs, at half or full duplex, the switch will automatically sense the link speed, but will defualt to communication at half duplex. Because the Series 2510 Switch behaves in this way (in compliance with the IEEE 802.3 standard), if a device connected to the switch has a fixed configuration at full duplex, the device will not connect correctly to the switch. The result will be high error rates and very inefficient communications between the switch and the device. Make sure all device connected to the Series 2510 Switch are configured to auto negotiate, or are configured to connect at half duplex."

When the Qwest switch is set to 100Full and i hook up my HP Procurve i get horrible internet connections. Only 2-3Mbs. I called qwest and asked them to set their switch to auto. As soon as they did that I was able to get my full download speed(upload is still 2-3Mbs) Qwest is refusing to leave their circuit at full auto though. They are changing it back to 100Full and im getting horrible internet connections again.

Do all switches behave similar to my HP Procurve when it comes to this duplexing issue? What are my options to resolve this? Anyone have any ideas?
 
Set your interface to 100/Full, otherwise you'll auto-negotiate at 100/Half causing numerous collisions. This is normal behavior for Cisco switches as well.
 
I cant believe a provider would actually change a port config for a subscriber. Its best practice to hard code all your interfaces when using copper.
