switch and uplink

Hello,
I just recieved a linksys 8port switch SD208 and I have a few problems,
first I can t seem to get the uplink to work with my router. It s the alcatel speed touch pro. I can t detect it on the network, however if I plug it in my 10mbps hub and then connect the hub to the switch it works, has anybody got an idea how to fix that?
And on another note, the switch makes a lot of "power noise", is it because their switches are just crappy or should I return it?

You might need to use a Crossover cable between the switch and the router. I didn't have to, but I have a big ass 24 port switch, so i'm assuming it's auto-switching

I did try using crossover and non crossover cables.

you're connecting the uplink of one to a regular port of the other, right (with a straight through cable)?
