firstly please don't laugh
. that out of the way here's the situation/proposal idea at present. i've got a Sapphire Radeon x850 XT in which now whenever the GPU goes over 540MHz i get artifacts, lock ups and/or restarts.. i've got a ThermalRight V1 installed on it already (and actually was the first giddy guinea pig installer of the ThermalRight V1 whom managed to install it onto an "unsupported" x850 XT on the first week of its release after modding the bracket according to them atleast) and things were fine playing anything up to installing and then playing F.E.A.R.. after a few days in at 565MHz the first artifacts (jagged triangles) occured after i exited F.E.A.R. and jumped into UT2004. after such came the mix and match of artifacts, lock up and/or restarts. i've since ripped out the 5.12 Catalyst Drivers and loaded in the 5.13 but have yet to have the chance to play anything to see if all is well..
while looking at my setup i realized something that could be wrong (and this you can laugh at) is that i have the Lian-Li V1000 so my GPU is upside down and thus the Heat Pipes for the V1 are steered in the opposit direction of which the V1 was intended. as it stands the Maximum temp i've seen is 59C with the V1 installed in what amounts to a backwards manner but then there is the issue of zero Memory cooling.. contact between the GPU and the V1 is perfect and i've taken it off twice to make sure of it. so i come to the proposal of which i wanted some takes on as i'm technically crazed enough to try it. i think this is a cooling matter so here's the idea/question:
would there be, in your opinion, any reservation you'd suggest to trying out a Swiftech MCX159-A on a Radeon x850 XT? i figure i could put some Swiftech MC14 BGA Ramsinks on if this were the setup and thus cool both the GPU and the Memory whereas the V1 makes the Memory impossible to be cooled. after looking around at the numbers the MCX159-A takes care of Temps of similarly hot NB's in the range of what i am dealing with but with better rise numbers between Idle and Load. granted the rise isn't dealing with a GPU but the rise is a whopping 4C at Load on an nForce2 Ultra over Idle as compared to the Stock rising to 9C+ at Load.
your thoughts? am i nuts --> feel free to tell me so
