So what your saying is its quieter and has an adjuster? Like i said, right?

The MCP655 is quieter than the MCP650 and has an adjuster.

DD D5 is quieter than the DD D4 and has an adjuster.

DD D5 = MCP655
DD D4 = MCP650
 
If you mod the DDC 12V (or the MCP350 I think its called), to the 1/2 barb mod, the flowrate skyrockets and there is no gain in dBa's.

both pumps have the adjuster. both pumps should have the same noise level.
 
I have a MCP655. I find it have a very high pitched noise. It makes me want to quit watercooling...I'm serious.

Maybe it's because my 1st pump was a MCP350... :(

I almost feel guilty about my old $30-50 pond pump setups. Nearly silent, and the ones that were LV (12V and 24V) definitely had more flow; actually, I think I might still have a 12V 400GPH+ 5' head. (I don't own anything without at least 5' head.)

I suggest scrapping the overpriced rebrands, and going to your local pond supply store. Submersible or inline entirely up to you, though the submersibles tend to be smaller and quieter. 'Course, you could always get an external inline that does 12,000GPH and watercool everything in your house that produces heat. ;)
 
The problem with submersibles and many of the higher powered pond pumps is that they weren't designed with efficiency in mind. Lots of them dump a lot of heat into the water, which lessens the performance of the entire loop. A "rebrand" with lower flow will often times produce better results because they dont put out as much heat.

This applies much more so to submersibles than other pumps.
 
That's good news, considering my D4 has been biting the dust lately.

I'm down for the D5 now. :)

How much heat it puts out depends on the drive method and build quality, not intended use. Yes, they build them a bit 'looser' in terms of temperature tolerances generally, but it depends. Generally you'll only see 4-5F on a good 110VAC/220VAC pump. Key word being "good."

I'll have to check what I have running the fountain in the pond out back. Flows somewhere between 350-450GPH @ 2' unadjusted, magdrive, been going two years non-stop. Temp raise is <1C if it's there at all. In my opinion, the only real advantage of inline vs. submersible is that inlines are not surrounded by returning heat. Sticking heatsinks onto a metal resevoir or using copper pipes helps that a lot IME.

go back and mod the 350.....ironically i bought a 655 thinking that it was going to be quiet compare to the 650, and 3 days later by mistake i recieved a 350.best mistake ever:)
 
MCP350 with a 1/2" mod. Silent, and damn near as fast as the MCP655 at full speed and yet still silent.
 
doesnt the 350 have issues with you needing to beat on it to get it to start my comp wouldnt even start if i had to do that :eek: i pulled the plug on my pump to put it on a testing psu to check to see how much stress it was putting on stuff, i watched 6800 temps just for the hell of it as i did it, temp went from 45 to 52C in under a second, but it was under load... the cpu went up way faster i bet but i didnt watch that but envision 1.55v prescott at 4 ghz and youd get the idea :eek:

There was a bad batch that did have difficulty with that, yes. It is mostly caused by people having a poor path to the inlet of the pump.
 
Hmmm...to look for a used D4 for cheap, go with a D5, or stick with my eheim 1250...

Decisions, decisions.

def not a D4. I'd get a D5 in that situation though. Isn't the eheim an AC pump? And it's big. Yuck on both counts.
 
The D5 if I remember right has more pressure anf better head than the D4, but the original D4 had a higher flow rate.......... :D

That is strange because I have to put my ear up to the pump to hear it when it's running, even when everything else is off during leak tests. Of course mine isn't mounted in a normal fashion either.

Yeah, but it is reliable and quiet :).

I might get a D5 if I find it worthwhile to buy in terms of performance increase. If I can only drop my temperatures by 2C or so, then it isn't worth $80 imho.
