Swapping PSU Fan

I'm sure something like this has been asked before and I just can't find the right search terms to find it but I'm working on time constraints and need to get this project done by x-mas, so sorry if it's been answered before.
Anyway, I ended up with an extra UV reactive led fan that I know I'll never use if not in this case. So I was thinking of swapping it for the ugly plain black fan in the PSU. The fan in the PSU is soldered to a small circuit board that is quite hard to get at. I was hoping to cut the wires of both fans and splice them together. The fan in the PSU has two wires (1 red, 1 black) the orange UV fan has four wires (1 red, 2 yellow, 1 black). Is it possible to swap these fans. The UV fan has 4 UV leds in it, is that what the extra wires are for? If it is possible how should I do it? Could I simply strip the wires and heatshrink them together? Would soldering be better? Again I'm a noob at modding anything so I appreciate your patience and help. Thanks in advance.

The fan only needs the red and the black wires to run. The rest are probably for RPM reporting.
 
be VERY careful when replacing your fan in the PSU. I have an Enermax 430w PSU and it had a leaking cap in it. When I took it apart to replace it, I decided I'd put a VERY high cfm fan from a Compaq hot swappable 600w power supply (dead unfortunately) in place of the original 92mm fan. The original fan ran at 5v .23A. The compaq fan was normally a 12v .67A. The higher amperage fried a transistor on the circuit board which caused a short and prevented my PSU from even turning on. So, I looked at it real good and de-soldered the fried transistor and left that part of the ciruit open and soldered the new fan directly to the 5v rail and that solved my problems.

moral of the story is: If you're replacing the original fan with one that has a higher Amperage rating, it may be better to just connect it directly to the 5v/12v rails to avoid overloading the fan circuit.

btw, this just happened to me last night and I fixed it this morning.

:EDIT: btw, the other poster is right, Red = Power, Black = Ground, Yellow/Blue (most often those are the colors anyway) = RPM
 
Thanks for the quick response. I also found answers to some of my questions in the FAQ. I can't believe I skimmed over that.

woah your psu used a 5v fan? thats pretty weird... 99% of the time PSU's will have a regular 12v 80mm fan in them...

and ya, as was said... red to red, black to black, ignore yellow wire (its for RPM monitoring)

yeah, shocked me too. I was all ready to mod a pot on my new fan because it's loud as hell ( I think it moves something of around 125cfm) and moves plenty more air than the original at low speed...but when I had the pot on there, the fan wouldn't turn on. so I measured the voltage on the fan plugs and they were 5v on each fan plug. so I just plugged it straight in...and that's when the transistor smoked because of the increased current draw. my damn room stunk something fierce too...

It's an enermax psu. (EG451P-V to be exact).
