Swapping out the Mobo and CPU

Ok, so after my PSU died and killed the mobo and CPU; I'm replacing them with exactly the same parts. Will I have to re-install windows or will it work straight off.

Also, because I got an OEM version of windows vista will I have to get the liccense re activated?
 
You might have to run a repair install to get it to work properly. Since it is OEM it will probably complain about hardware changes.
 
You can try and just boot it to see what happens. If nothing is changing (same parts), it is possible, you can get away without a re-install. Otherwise, a repair or re-install will be necessary.

WIth the OEM license, you'll need to call MS and let them know that the MoBo got fried and you needed to replace. They should without much issue give you authorization to activate. If you don't, hang up and call back again till you get someone sensible enough to understand it is STILL the same machine.
 
IF you have to re-install (don't think it is needed for a repair), you'll see a window for activation. You'll see activate online (won't work since it is OEM and you've activated once before) or by phone. Click by phone (guessing here as I've never actually had to deal with it) and then it'll give you a number to call.

99% sure that if you drop the exact same mobo, cpu and ram in that you will not have to reinstall the OS. You may have to reactivate though because it is new hardware and changing the motherboard will usually trigger reactivation.

Also, I've reactivated OEM licenses before on the internet without issue. Chances of you having to call Microsoft in my opinion is null, depending on how recently you've activated it though.I reactivated my XP OEM code 3 times and once with a new motherboard, but it was always a year or two apart so I'm not sure if that was why I could :confused:

Either way, let us know if you have to reactivate and if you had to call Microsoft. I'm curious if your Vista code will work again.
